Flatweaves Tribal

Our tribal flatweaves or kilims (known as gelims in Farsi) are traditional colourful weavings with bold geometric and floral designs. They are woven by Luri and Ghashgha’i nomads who interpret centuries’ old designs and motifs that have been handed down from generation to generation. Gatchme is a mixed-technique flatweave that is a Zollanvari innovation. For these we have adapted the technique used for weaving traditional khorjins (bags) and applied it a room size floor covering. Finally, our popular Jajims are a collection of mixed-technique flatweaves that the nomadic tribes of the Zagros region produce exclusively for us.

Flatweaves Minimalist

Zollanvari ‘minimalist’ kilims are diverse. Baneh kilims are woven in northern regions in sections using natural undyed wools and then skilfully stitched together. The one-piece Zagros kilims woven by the Luri and Ghashgha’i nomads are monochromatic. They have traditional ‘lazy lines’ that form subtle patterns of diamonds and squares. Maryam kilims, woven by the same tribes, have plain ground colours with repeat motifs hand-embroidered in pure silk, awarded Best Innovation at the CDAs in 2009. The jewel in the crown of our ‘minimalist’ flatweaves is a collection that draws inspiration from the old and antique Mazandaran kilims that have appeared on the market in the past decade – a truly modern collection. Caprino is a new flatweave collection woven from undyed goat’s hair on which pile-knotted erratic modernist lines in bright colours are superimposed.

Flatweaves Heritage

Our Heritage collection of flatweaves includes archaic design Luri and Ghashgha’i gelims as well as fine ‘modernist’ Mazandaran gelims which were almost unknown less than a decade ago, but which have now been documented in Parviz Tanavoli’s ground-breaking book ‘Undiscovered Minimalism’. Reza Zollanvari has collected some of the finest and most unusual of these gelims, including some extraordinary double-sided pieces. Highlights of all these collections can be viewed online.
