Transitional Tribal

Zollanvari introduced ‘Baluch Soumaks’ to the market for the first time in collaboration with Baluch nomads. These weavings combine kilim, soumak and pile weaving techniques to create a multi-textured jewel-like surface that gives the rugs depth and a three- dimensional appearance. They are now being woven in the southeast,, home to Afshar nomads who were originally from Turkey. Woven in wool, we have added silk to highlight the design motifs. The colour palette we have recently developed uses lighter shades such as creams and pale greens to give these rugs a modern tribal look.

Two new collections that represent a fusion of various tribal traditions – that of Berber carpets of the Beni Ourain people and Zigorat carpets of the Fars region – will be launched in 2017. Our new Maghreb’i Zigorat carpets combine the style and quality of the weavings of the nomads with Berber designs from the Rif Mountains region of Morocco. The Zigorat Pelt Collection fuses the technique of Zigorat carpets with high pile and flatwoven (kilim) ends, the design motifs of traditional Gabbehs and the animal pelt effects of Berber rugs. Both collections are designed for contemporary interiors.

Transitional Formal

Bulurbaft, our most ‘classical’ design carpets, are woven in the province of Kurdistan. ‘Bulur’ is Farsi for ‘brilliant’ or ‘precise’, an apt definition for these finely woven carpets that are similar to traditional Bijar carpets in quality and weave. Our designs draw inspiration from old Senneh carpets, but we have refreshed and updated the colour palette to suit modern sensibilities. Our Luribaft carpets are knotted by Luri tribesmen or by Ghashgha’i women married into the tribe. The designs are passed down from generation to generation or are recreated using ancient Luri ornaments as templates, since some archaic motifs had vanished from their repertoire. Until the 1950s the Luri tribes worked exclusively with vegetable dyes. The emergence of chemical dyes, mainly from Germany, made it easier to dye wool, but led to a loss of the intrinsic character of these fine carpets. In the 1980s Zollanvari forced a return to the ancient vegetable dyeing techniques and thereby revived the allure of these carpets.

Reza Zollanvari has collected at source some of the finest and most unusual old and antique tribal carpets from the Zagros mountain region in Iran, mainly from the Luri and Ghashgha’i tribes.
